授業のねらい
In this class, students will learn the basics of communication as human interaction, beyond simple exchange of information. They will objectively understand their own and other cultures and use the knowledge acquired to understand different values and behaviors, thus developing their own intercultural communication competence. In particular, after having their awareness of cultural differences in communication raised, students will learn practical measures to understand, manage and maintain interpersonal relationships in society.

A. Students will learn about topics, themes and terminology related to intercultural communication.
B. Students will observe and learn from different cultures, and raise their awareness about different cultures.
C. Students will use their newly-acquired knowledge to understand different cultures and manage their attitude towards situations involving different cultures.
D. Students will reflect for, in, and on the class and think about how they can contribute to improvement in communication in society.

授業の進め方
学修上の助言
The classes will be done online, on demand. This class will include lectures, videos, quizzes and other activities and resources. Students will take an active role in interacting with resources, learning and understanding. Classes will include reviews, questionnaires and preview items to aid learning, and to provide students with opportunities for reflecting and receiving feedback.
This class will be conducted in English.

Classes involve groupwork (from small groups to whole-class activities) and individual work. Several sessions also include peer review, problem solving, game-based learning, and problems using authentic information. There will be some presentations, group discussion, and other learner-centred activities. 
ICTを活用した双方向型授業の有無
Students will use their cellphones for a variety of tasks, such as translation, taking pictures, making movies, and answering to online quizzes. Resources, such as quizzes, questionnaires and worksheets, will also be available online (Moodle). Students will sometimes use computers for research and for preparing materials, such as slideshows.

I lived, studied, and worked in Brazil and New Zealand.
I taught ESL (English as a second language) and leading activities for students of various cultural and linguistic backgrounds in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2009/2010.
I’m qualified as a teacher of English as a foreign language and have 10 years of experience in teaching using the communicative approach.
My research on specific learning difficulties and inclusive learning follows the social model of disability, which emphasises the role and effects of society.
